Program Facts

The Foundation administers a number of scholarship and loan repayment programs for health professional students and graduates. All program recipients are required to provide direct patient care in a medically underserved area (MUA) of California as designated by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD). The period of obligated professional service is one to three years (depending upon program).

"Who may apply for a scholarship award? You may apply for a scholarship if you are a current health professional student enrolled or accepted into an accredited California school, college or university. Award money will be paid directly to the educational institution. Disbursements may take up to 6-8 weeks.

Who may apply for the loan repayment award? You may apply for a loan repayment awards if you have graduated with health professional degree. Official transcripts or other documentation may be requested or submitted with your application to verify your degree. This may not apply to all programs.

Awarded funds will be paid directly to the lending institution every three months. Awardee may need to periodically submit payment to lending institution or request deferment of payment until payment has been established. Disbursements may take up to 6-8 weeks and awardee may need to periodically make payment to the lending institution.

Criteria varies from program to program but may require applicant's to submit documentation of their financial need, work experience, community background, career goals, and length of commitment to practice in a medically underserved area, community involvement, and prior academic performance.
